HPAI in dairy cattle: WVDL update and links to biosecurity recommendations

WVDL continues to work with our colleagues and stakeholders to manage the dairy cow illness associated with circulating strain of highly pathogenic influenza in migrating wild birds.  There are now confirmed reports of lateral transmission from lactating cows moved from Texas to Ohio, Michigan, and Idaho.

Along with the information in our previous web post, please see this information released on 4/2/24 from USDA: APHIS Recommendations for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Livestock

Additionally, WVDL is part of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) working group that has released biosecurity guidelines that are easy to read to develop risk mitigation strategies for Dairies.  These guidelines, along with the guidelines provided by the USDA release, linked above, all originate from www.securemilksupply.org.

If your dairy herd is experiencing increased cow illness, specifically in 2nd lactation or greater cows that are 150 days or more in milk, please contact your herd veterinarian for guidance and resources.

For accredited veterinarians in Wisconsin, please contact DATCP and WVDL to make a plan for diagnostic testing.
