Turnaround times for reporting of results may be affected by large sample numbers, availability of reagents or cell lines, confirmatory testing, legal holidays or inclement weather. Consequently, turnaround times listed for tests are estimates. There is a $10 accession fee for every submission, unless noted otherwise in the Test Details. If you have an urgent test request, WVDL will do the best we can to accommodate expedited testing. In this situation, an additional cost of $30 per sample will applied. It is imperative that clients call the lab (608-262-5432) immediately to request expedited testing.
NOTE: These are the costs charged to the client. Additional costs may be incurred, with notification.
Submissions for tests NOT listed here will be referred to a WVDL approved laboratory. The fee for a referral test is $25 plus the fees charged by the testing laboratory.

Osmolality Of Milk, Milk Replacer And Electrolyte Solutions Via Freeze Depression Analysis For Submissions Of 1 To 5 Samples.
Osmolality of milk, milk replacer and electrolyte solutions via freeze depression analysis for submissions of 1 to 5 samples.
Milk, milk replacer or electrolyte solutions. Modifications to the liquid feed, such as the addition of probiotics, has not been validated for this assay and is not covered under our standard operating procedures. If submitting liquid feed that might have modifications, the use of these results for any purpose is at the discretion of the submitter. Please contact the WVDL with any questions.
Species
Sampling Instructions
Within the dairy industry, calves are given milk replacer to provide protein, fats, carbohydrates, and nutrients in place of the mother¿s milk. The ratio of powder to water in mixing milk replacer is very important as high concentrations can lead to delayed nutrient absorption, diarrhea, bloat, and sodium toxicity. Osmolality, the total solute concentration of an aqueous solution, is used as an indicator of proper milk replacer to water ratio. Coupled with total solids, an osmolality reading can help determine if a farm is using the proper amount, or kind, of milk replacer for their calves.
Collection Container
Packing Instructions
Samples must be sent in 2 or 3oz snap-top vials and kept refrigerated at 0-6°C. Visit our website and click on Submission Guidelines/Forms/Veterinary Supply Order Form to purchase milk vials.
